An Adult Day Care’s Response to COVID-19 and Preventive Measures to Confront the Virus

Elder Care

During this time of concern, we need to utilize as many services as possible to care for ourselves and our loved ones. Recently, our Director of Elder Care Coordination, Anne Markel-Crozier, spoke with Rachelle Causey, the Center Director at Active Day of Cape May, and they are still open and caring for their members.  They are continuing to accept new admissions as well.  In discussing what precautions they are taking, Ms. Causey said, “The CDC suggests that we sanitize our door handles, rails, buses and tables two times a day, but we have upped our game and are sanitizing 4-5 times a day and more, as needed, to protect our staff and members.”  Rachelle indicated that they have seen a drop in member attendance but still have members coming and they continue to benefit from socialization, activities, cognitive stimulation, two meals a day, and transportation to and from the center. Rachelle also commented that they use hand sanitizer almost as a game to make sure all the staff and members are protecting themselves and each other.

Each day the staff and members are required to have a medical screen before attending for the day; they must be free from fever, cough, shortness of breath, etc. Rachelle sees this as a continued benefit for families and members during this time of uncertainty.  So many of their families are now working from home, home schooling their children, and needing to care for their elderly family members.  This allows them to not only have a break from the added stress but also a safe, secure program for their loved ones.
